Victims of mass rape by troops await justice in IHK

Srinagar, February 23 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the victims of the mass rape by Indian troops in Kunanposhpora area of Kupwara district have been waiting for justice for the past 18 years.

On the intervening night of February 23 and 24, 1991, troops of Indian army’s 4 Raj Rifles disgraced 42 women of the village including an 80-year-old. The victims have developed several psychiatric disorders.

Recalling that night, villagers told media men that the troopers cordoned off the village and asked men to assemble in an open ground. “We were paraded and tortured throughout the night under open sky,” they said. “Troopers barged into our houses and outraged the chastity of our women irrespective of age. They didn’t even spare a 5-year-old child and 95-year-old lady,” they added.

The police lodged an FIR at police station Trehgam but till date no action has been taken. Locals said that after the incident many civil and police officials turned up and promised that erring troopers would be punished. “Eighteen years have since the FIR was registered but the accused have not been booked,” they said, adding, “Case has been closed and hushed up. It should be reopened and culprits should be punished.”

“I was feeding my minor daughter inside the house when the troops dragged me and tore my clothes and I went unconscious,” said a victim pleading anonymity. Another victim said, “A group of troopers barged into our house and attacked me. I pleaded before them that I was pregnant but they showed no mercy.”

  1. Great idea. For all the articles I see on food it was a smart idea to put out an a piece on the utensils you would be using to cook them.
