One Track Mind rocks the History Rocks III concert

History Rocks, the most popular rock music show on FOX History & Entertainment (every Friday night at 10:30pm), opened to a full house with a thrilling performance by the young rock band, One Track Mind, at Hard Rock Café on Thursday night.

The highlight of the evening was the riff dripping performance by the young and energetic band as they belted one classic number after another to a roaring audience.

A sixteen-part series, History Rocks III is dedicated to the definitive sound of legendary rockers. This May, FOX History & Entertainment allows music lovers a peek into the lives of rock legends and devour their biggest concerts. Featuring this season is Jimi Hendrix’s legendary performance at the Woodstock festival; Queen’s live performance to a jam-packed Wembley Stadium; Pink Floyd’s electrifying do of what is considered their best album ever amongst others. Fujitsu Launches World's First 125°C Spec. Low Power Memory for SiPs

Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd (FMAL) today announced the launch of two new Consumer FCRAM(*1) memory chips featuring an operating temperature range that has been extended to a high-temperature of 125°C for the first time in memory with a DDR SDRAM interface. Sample shipment of the two new FCRAM products, the 512Mbit (MB81EDS516545), and 256Mbit (MB81EDS256545), will begin from today. These products are low power consumption memory optimized for use in system-in-packages (SiPs) in digital consumer products such as digital TVs and digital video camcorders.

Customers will benefit from using these new FCRAM chips combined with a System-on-Chip (SoC) in a SiP configuration, in that as the temperature of the SiP rises with the increase of operating speed, the operation is not impaired or limited by the memory. Furthermore, there are the benefits of reduced development effort needed for product design, reduced board space, as well as a reduction in the number of components.

Today’s digital consumer products continue to demand higher performance and faster speeds as well as low costs. To satisfy such needs, the use of SiPs, that combine for example a memory chip with a SoC, has been increasing. The use of SiPs also reduces the number of necessary components as well as reducing board space, thus helping to lower system costs. SiPs also make design easier, such as for the development of high-speed memory interfaces or for noise reduction measures.

As illustrated in Figure 1, up until now conventional memory has given limitations to SiP usage that are resolved with the new FCRAM products. Figure 1(a) shows a SiP configuration where a high-performance SoC has a large power consumption that generates heat such that the SiP temperature becomes 105°C. The SoC is specified to a maximum of 125°C so its operation is fine, however a conventional memory is used that can only operate up to 95°C so this SiP configuration is not usable.

To use such a conventional memory in the SiP, another option is to add some kind of heat disperser like a heat-sink. As shown in Figure 1(b), this would reduce the SiP temperature to 90°C so operating is feasible, however there is increased cost and increases size. Subsequently, many customers who have been investigating using SiPs have wished for memory with an extended operating temperature range.

Fujitsu Microelectronics has responded to those needs by developing these 512Mbit and 256Mbit Consumer FCRAM products with a maximum operating temperature of 125°C. As shown in Figure 1(c), using the 125°C rated FCRAM, the SiP operates fine even with an SoC with high power consumption, and without the need to add a heat-sink. This solves the problem of increased costs for thermal measures encountered when trying to use 95°C-rated conventional memory.

Furthermore, even for operating temperatures of 125°C, these FCRAM products can provide data transfer rates that are more than 2 times the data rate of conventional DDR SDRAM memory, while keeping power consumption low. In fact the new 512Mbit FCRAM for example can provide a reduction in power consumption of up to 50% compared to the equivalent conventional DDR2 SDRAM memory. Therefore these new FCRAMs also contribute to a 50% reduction of CO2 emissions from the memory in digital consumer products.

Fujitsu Microelectronics will continue to develop products with the necessary performance and functionality for SiPs in order to provide solutions for digital consumer products with optimal value and cost.

Product Features

1. World first operation up to 125°C

These new FCRAMs have a maximum operating temperature of 125°C, so compared to conventional SDRAM memory - with maximum temperature specifications of 85°C or 95°C - the allowable power consumption within the system is greatly increased. Subsequently, it is possible to realize SiP solutions that were previously not possible, such as where high power consumption SoCs – needed in high-performance digital consumer electronics – combined with memory would lead to overheating. Also, it allows the use of low cost packaging that does not require high-temperature specifications.

2. Low power consumption

By expanding the bus width to 64bits and reducing the operating frequency, and with terminating resistors(*2) not being required, these new FCRAMs enable a maximum of 50% reduction in power consumption compared to the equivalent system of two conventional DDR2 SDRAM memory chips with 16bit bus width. The new FCRAMs would also reduce CO2 emissions attributable to memory by 50% in digital consumer products.

3. High data bandwidth

For operating temperatures of 125°C, by having a 64bit bus width and a maximum operating frequency of 200MHz, these new FCRAMs can provide a data transfer rate of 3.2Gbyte/second, which is 2 times the data rate of conventional DDR2 SDRAM memory. For operating temperatures of 105°C and below with an operating frequency of 216MHz, the data transfer rate increases to 3.46Gbyte/second.

*1. Consumer FCRAM: FCRAM (Fast Cycle Random Access Memory) is Fujitsu Microelectronics’ proprietary RAM core architecture featuring high-speed and low power consumption. Consumer FCRAM refers to an FCRAM core with an industry-standard low power SDRAM interface, and which is optimized for use in digital consumer products.

*2. Terminating resistors: Resistors that are attached at the termination of a circuit wiring or a signal. They are used to prevent interference due to signal reflection, however they have high power consumption. For DDR2 SDRAM, the terminating resistors are embbeded on the chip (so-called ODT: On Die Termination).

Taj Hotels appoints Mr. Sarabjeet Singh as Head of Operations for Taj GVK Hotels and GM - Taj Krishna

Seasons launches 'luxury homes'

Naiknavare Developers and Seasons Apartment Hotel will jointly launch Seasons Luxury Homes a new concept in Hospitality and Serviced Apartments sector.

The campaign aptly named as ‘BIG Ice cream Traffic Week’ was launched today from the Traffic control room square public gardens by Mr. A V Ravichandra, IPS (Deputy Commissioner of Police- Traffic) and Little RJ’s (kids who got selected to perform as RJ’s on BIG 92.7 FM). Commenced today the ice cream traffic week will continue till 28 May, 2009.

Leading NGOs Call for International Action to Combat Epidemic of Non-communicable Diseases

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF), International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and World Heart Federation (WHF) today issued a joint statement that calls on the international community to address urgently the epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), responsible for 35 million deaths a year. The statement demands a substantial increase in funding for NCDs and greater availability of essential medicines, among other urgent responses, in a way to accelerate achievement of the health Millennium Development Goals.

Public health experts are concerned about the impact of the global economic crisis and warn that the emerging epidemic of NCDs is threatening to overwhelm healthcare systems worldwide unless action is taken. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases cause 60% of all deaths worldwide, with four in every five of these deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. NCDs are an under-appreciated cause of poverty and now present a serious barrier to economic development. They are estimated to reduce gross domestic product (GDP) by up to 5% in many low- and middle-income countries, dealing a double blow to fragile economies struggling in the global recession.

Professor Pekka Puska, President of the World Heart Federation states: "We can no longer ignore the burden that cardiovascular disease, together with the other NCDs including diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases, is placing on countries that are least equipped to deal with them. We urgently call on the international community to ensure that the funding models applied to infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria are expanded to stop the spiralling death rates from NCDs before the most vulnerable are pushed further into the poverty trap."

IDF, WHF and UICC are united by their concern with the consequences of physical inactivity, tobacco use and poor diet, three avoidable risk factors that contribute significantly to the NCDs responsible for 60% of global mortality.

In its 2009-2013 Action Plan for the Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, the World Health Organization identifies international partnerships as paramount in the global struggle against NCDS. WHO calls for concerted action on a global scale and identifies a key role for non-governmental organizations. IDF, WHF and UICC have taken up this call. Combined, the three organizations represent the interests of 730 member organizations in over 170 countries. They have joined forces to create a powerful voice for change and urge the international community to take action in the face of the NCD epidemic.

Professor David Hill, President of the International Union against Cancer states: "Now, more than ever, we need to join efforts to give cancer and the other NCDs the priority they deserve. The advantages that stand to be gained from the strength of strategic international partnerships, such as the one between our three organizations, will contribute towards a more effective global response to NCDs."

Call for Action

The joint statement issued today in Geneva was timed to coincide with the meeting of the World Health Assembly. The organizations highlighted their support for the WHO Action Plan and call for the international community to:

1. Ensure the availability of essential medicines for people living with NCDs in low- and middle- income countries

2. Immediately and substantially increase financing for NCDs

3. Integrate NCD prevention into national health systems and the global development agenda

4. Create a Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for NCDs

5. Support a UN General Assembly Special Session on NCDs

WHO has shown that simple, cost-effective solutions exist to take on the burgeoning epidemic of NCDs. If the international community acts now, hundreds of millions of lives could be saved and the quality of life improved for millions more. Such action would bring the international community closer to achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals. Failure to act will have a detrimental effect on healthcare systems and economies worldwide. Governments who invest in prevention now will be spared the overwhelming costs of chronic care later.

Professor Martin Silink, President of the International Diabetes Federation explains: "the world has not previously had to cope with an epidemic of NCDs. Health systems will need to adapt fast to mobilize new and existing resources to tackle the epidemic through prevention and education. The majority of people with non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer are responsible for most of their own care most of the time. Health systems will need to support the role of people with NCDs and see them as part of the solution."

Microchip Technology unveils industry's first operational amplifiers with on-chip, one-shot calibration circuit

Microchip Technology, a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, has announced the world's first and only operational amplifiers (op amps) to include mCal, an on-chip calibration circuit that calibrates offset voltage at power-up using an internal power on-reset detector, or based upon the state of an external pin. The result is a low initial voltage offset and a means to minimise drift over time and temperature, which are extremely important for applications involving instrumentation and sensor conditioning.

The high-bandwidth (50 MHz), low-power MCP651/2/5 (MCP65X) op amps provide low bias and quiescent currents, high output-drive capability and a rail-to-rail output for better performance across the entire operating-voltage range. This feature set makes the op amps ideal for even the most demanding applications – including those in the consumer, industrial and medical markets.

The MCP65X op amps feature a high output-drive current of 95 milliamperes, which enables them to drive heavy loads and results in better performance across a wide range of applications. With their rail-to-rail output, the op amps provide greater dynamic range –

even at lower operating voltages – for more accurate performance across the entire operating-voltage range.
"The MCP65X is the industry's first op amp family to feature an on-chip, one-shot calibration circuit that is active upon power-up or controlled via an external hardware pin," said Bryan Liddiard, vice president of marketing with Microchip's Analog and Interface Products Division. Narus Appoints DLN Shastri as Narus India's Vice President of Sales and Business Development

Narus, the leader in real-time traffic intelligence, announced today that DLN Shastri has been appointed vice president of sales and business development to Narus Networks Private Limited (NNPL), Narus' subsidiary in India. Shastri has more than 25 years' experience in sales and marketing, business development, and channel management in the telecom market. In his new role, Shastri will be responsible for the sales of Narus solutions into the Indian market. He will also tackle business development, including identifying and signing distribution partners in India to help expand Narus' presence in the region.

Shastri has a long professional career in the telecom industry. Prior to joining Narus, he served as SBU Head of System Integration Business for HCL InfoSystems Ltd. There, he created the Infrastructure Business Unit to address the needs of telecom service providers through telecom equipment manufacturers. He worked closely with new telecom service providers to offer end-to-end system integration services. Shastri also secured infrastructure and IT services business for HCL.
