The first edition of ‘Design ACE- 2009’, State Level Engineering Design Contest conducted by Barry-Wehmiller International Resources (BWIR), concluded on March 7, 2009, in Chennai. The contest received an overwhelming response of 100+ entries, out of which 15 teams got through to the finals. The valedictory function was presided by Dr. R. Radhakrishnan, Vice Chancellor, Anna University Coimbatore.
The 3 month long contest is an endeavor by BWIR to promote and encourage design capabilities among the engineering students. The contestants of ‘Design ACE-2009’ submitted one innovative design and a business problem design along with a short write-up. The finalists got an opportunity to present their models in front of jury for 15 minutes.
The competition was quite tough and V. Vignesh & N Keerthivasan, GKM College of Engineering and Technology emerged as the winners. The winners were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 30,000/-. Followed by B. Manoj & K. Ramkumar, PSG College of Technology who won the Second Prize of Rs. 25000/- and K.Y Balaji & S.Suganesh of Sona College of Technology stood third winning Rs. 20, 000/-. The top three teams, in addition to the cash prizes were offered a paid internship at BWIR to work on real-time projects and licenses of SolidWorks.
In addition to this, BWIR today announced its plans of BWIR Academia Initiative Programme ‘Seeding new Talent Pool, for an innovative tomorrow’. Announcing this innovative industry-academia collaboration, Mr. Senthil Kumar, Vice – President & Senior Partner - Operations, BWIR said “This is our first step to bridge the divide between the industry practicalities and academic curriculums which would address the great demand for indigenous specialized engineering talent”. He also added that, as a part of this initiative, regular workshops, live projects, community programs and internships for students and faculty in Mechanical Engineering Domain will be conducted. Towards this initiative, BWIR has partnered with SolidWorks and organized for a workshop titled, ‘Getting the best out of 3D Modeling CAD Tools’ today, at the finals of ‘Design ACE-2009’. The participants’ received SoildWorks Student Design Kit and full paid scholarships for the CSWA Examination worth Rs. 5000 each, that is to be held in May-June 2009.” The workshop saw more than 500 students participate taking the tally of Prizes & Gifts given out at Design ACE to over Rs. 25 Lakhs.
