Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Deploys 1,300 Gigabit Switches from 3Com for a New High-Performance Network

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS), today announced that it has completed the rollout of 1,300 3Com® enterprise switches to the main and branch offices of Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance (SFMI), Korea’s largest non-life insurance company. The deployment will enable SFMI’s employees across the country to benefit from real-time voice traffic and data transmission for their PCs and IP phones.

When SFMI determined it was time for a network upgrade, it looked for alternatives that would help the company avoid paying a premium for its network infrastructure, without compromising performance. After a thorough review and performance testing of comparable networking solutions, SFMI determined that the 3Com Switch 5500 solution provided more value and an opportunity to lower its total cost of ownership.

Jae Jin Oh, 3Com’s Country Manager for Korea, said: “SFMI’s successful deployment lays another milestone on our long track record of serving the financial services industry with our well-established resilient switching technologies. 3Com will continue to leverage our culture of technological innovation along with our fresh, new enterprise product portfolio to bring enterprise customers around the world high-value, high-performance solutions that truly address their business needs.”

Developed at 3Com’s advanced R&D facility in China, the Switch 5500-EI leverages 3Com’s eXpandable Resilient Network (XRN®) technology that virtually combines multiple switches into a single logical switch. In addition to making the network easier to manage, it creates a high-availability network because the failure of any physical link will not bring down the virtual fabric. With 3Com XRN’s virtual network environment, SFMI benefits from increased scalability as multiple physical ports can be virtualized to provide higher bandwidth.

The 5500-EI switch is a premium stackable fast Ethernet switch for advanced edge applications. The 10/100 switch with multiple Gigabit links and high-availability features is designed for enterprises such as SFMI that run network applications requiring “five 9s” network uptime.

SFMI is also taking advantage of the 5500-EI’s Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) capability for distribution of power to other devices over the same cabling used for data transmission. In addition, the 5500-EI can also recognize IP phones and automatically place them in a dedicated virtual LAN to ensure security and service quality for VoIP traffic.
