Vedanta Aluminum assured the best practice of Occupational Safety at Lanjigarh, Orissa

Vedanta Aluminium Limited commenced observation of the 38th National Safety Week in its Alumina Refinery Complex at Lanjigarh on March 4, 2009. The observation shall be continued up to March 10, 2009 with various activities, promoting safety awareness among its employees.

The seven day long program was started with hoisting of national safety day flag by Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Chief Operating Officer. Senior officers of the refinery read the safety pledge, All the employees of the refinery, including the employees of associate companies promised to be committed towards the cause of safety, health and protection of environment and to observe rules, regulations for the same.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Mukesh Kumar said that occupational safety and health is an integral part of Vedanta Culture and the regular safety drive has significantly contributed to reduction in the rate of accidents in the plant. He also appealed the employees to keep their promise and respect the safety rules and regulation. All the employees were given safety batch during the function.

An all round safety campaign has been designed to observe the safety week which includes Essay competitions and Poster competition etc among the employees and other participants. By initiating such activities the company is promoting the attitude and habits about occupational health and safety among its employees. The company is campaigning with safety posters and slogans - displayed in the Plant premises to create more awareness among the employees and others.

A regular training program on safety is conducted for its employees and employees of associate partners. Periodic safety audit is also a standard practice of the company. Recently, company has been awarded OHSAS 18001 certificate that promotes a safe and healthy working environment by identifying and controlling health and safety risks.

The National Safety Week Campaign is being spearheaded by the National Safety Council for nearly three decades to mark its Foundation Day (4th March). The campaign, aimed at renewing the commitment of employees and general public to work safely has been successful in creating widespread safety awareness across various sectors.
The observation of 38th national safety week is being coordinated by the Health Safety and Environment Department, lead by Dr. RC Rout, AGM (HSE).
